Effective Questioning!
It’s been a few weeks since I have written about the dangers of giving advice and why we should avoid the lure of advice giving, and I’ve been trying my darnedest to practise what I preach. Problem is - unbeknownst to me I’ve been giving advice for thirty years. Whoops. It’s in my blood to give advice, and I think that’s ok and pretty normal. I want to help people! The shortest route between a person who with a problem and a person without is for me to guide them along the path they should tread, right? Well, maybe not.
So I’ve been trying really hard to swap the impulse to advice with curiosity about what the most effective question is in that moment. I now know that it will help the person far more in the long term if they are able to come up with a solution themselves.
